Physical Geography

Physical geography analyzes and measures the distribution of land, climate, soils, plants, animals, and other natural phenomena. Physical geography focuses on the spatial patterns of physical phenomena on the surface of the earth and the interrelationships between man and the environment, and aims to understand the components of the climate system and the physical properties of boulders, hydrospheres, atmospheres, soils, and global biosphere patterns. The basis of Physical geography is the knowledge of natural and physical factors affecting the life and development of human activities. Therefore, variables such as climate system, ecological and surface physical resources and their change over time and their positive and negative effects on human activity patterns are considered in Physical geography. The main branches of Physical geography include geomorphology and meteorology.

The Department of Geography at Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), having both branches of Physical geography (meteorology and geomorphology), started its activity in the undergraduate program in 1967 in the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences. Currently, the Department of Physical Geography at the Faculty of Earth Sciences accepts undergraduate students in the fields of meteorology and geomorphology.

The graduate program of Physical geography has been separated into different sub-disciplines such as applied meteorology and synoptics, hydrogeomorphology, geomorphology in environmental planning and natural hazards in order to diversify the choice for students of the physical geography department. Also, by admitting students in the doctoral program, this department pursues its fundamental goal of introducing the fields of activity and scientific and applied capabilities of physical geography and increasing research in this field in the scientific and research centers of the country. At present, the Department of Physical Geography has 13 faculty members in the fields of meteorology and geomorphology, who are active in education and applied research in fields such as climate change, geomorphological processes, natural hazards, land degradation and natural environment changes in interaction with human communities.
