Geology Laboratories

 

Geochemistry Laboratory

Quantitative analysis of the elements is available using classical and instrumental methods and facilities in the laboratory. This laboratory is equipped with an atomic absorption device, and an electric furnace.

Services that can be provided in this laboratory are: analysis of mineral and real samples, quantitative analysis of samples, preparation of samples for analysis by atomic absorption device, and preparation of standard solutions.

 

Laboratory for Preparing Thin and Polished Sections

In this laboratory, thin and polished sections and stone powder are prepared. This laboratory has facilities such as cutting machine, sub machine, plate cutting machine, polishing machine, crushing machine and powder preparation machine.

Activities: Holding training courses in the field of preparing thin sections, and preparing polished sections, powder and granulation of samples (200 microns).

 

Stratigraphic Laboratory

Activities:

  • ​Training courses: macrofossils, micro fossils, microfacis, training in systematic obtaining of geological sections, geological maps, stratigraphic columns, lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, field geology, Iranian geology
  • Providing service-research works, including identification of macrofossils, identification of micro-fossils, systematic obtaining (field) and preparation of stratigraphic sections, preparation of geological maps, preparation of columns and stratigraphic charts (litho-biostratigraphy) in the Paleontology Laboratory

 

Paleontology Laboratory

In the Paleontology Laboratory, the work consists of two parts: 1- Study of micro fossils; 2- Study of macrofossils.

Microfossils include foraminifera, and macrofossils include plant fossils, vertebrates, and invertebrates. This laboratory is used in 3 levels: bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate.

The equipment available in the laboratory are: loops for studying microfossils, and polarizing microscopes for studying microfacies and microfossils. In this laboratory, it is possible to determine the age of sedimentary deposits with the help of fossils and to determine sedimentary facies on a microscopic and macroscopic scale.

Activities:

  • Holding training courses focusing on: micro fossils, macrofossils, and plants
  • Providing research services with the subjects: identification of animal microfossils, identification of animal macrofossils, identification of plant fossils, and photography of fossil sections.

 

Economic Geology Laboratory

This laboratory is equipped with reflective light microscopes to study polished sections along with several sets of different minerals and stones collected from around the world and a number of replicas of crystals made of wood and rod balls. Reflective light microscopes are used to study opaque minerals. Also, the samples available in this laboratory are used in the courses of crystallography and mineralogy.

In this laboratory, training courses as well as laboratory projects such as mineralogy, crystallography, economic geology, estimation and evaluation of mines, providing research services, estimation and evaluation of mines, and preparation of hypsometric maps of mines are conducted.

 

Petrographic Laboratory

This laboratory is equipped with polarizing light transmission and reflecting microscopes to study thin and polished sections.

Activities:

  • Training courses on the following topics: optical crystallography, mineralogy, igneous lithology, sedimentary lithology, metamorphic lithology, igneous lithology and advanced metamorphism
  • Presenting service-research works in the field of: study of thin sections, study of polished sections, photography of thin sections.

 

Photogeology Laboratory

The educational objectives pursued in the laboratory of photogeology are familiarity with aerial and stereoscopic photographs, understanding and interpreting geological phenomena, measuring them, and finally preparing a preliminary geological map.

In this laboratory, training courses are held and applied researches are conducted in the fields of photogeology, preparing geological maps in different scales and preparing hypsometric maps of mines.

 

Microscopic Laboratory

This laboratory has facilities such as: binocular loops, monocular transmission light microscopes, binocular light transmission microscopes, monocular reflection light microscopes, and imaging microscopes.

In this laboratory, training courses of lithology, mineralogy, and crystallography, and service-research works such as study of lithology section, and digital photography of microscopic sections (7 megapixels) are conducted.

 

Nanofossil Laboratory

This laboratory is equipped with a Nikon microscope with a camera to study and photograph nanofossil sections, as well as equipment such as centrifuges, computers, scanners and printers.

In this laboratory, research services such as identification of nanofossils, bio and lithostratigraphy are provided, and training courses such as nanophysiology, systematic gathering of field samples and training in the preparation of nanofossil sections are held.


Geography Laboratories

 

Geomorphology Laboratory

The services that can be provided in this laboratory are:

  • Training courses on applied geomorphology and techniques of familiarity with laboratory tools and equipment
  • Providing research services such as calcimetry to find the percentage of lime in sediments, oxygenated water to remove organic matter from sediments, dry and wet granometry, morphoscopy of rubble and sand and hydrometry

Features include accurate and semi-accurate scales, pH and EC meters, distilled water, magnetic thermal stirrer, calcimeter, sieve shaker, flat shaker and thermoactor

 

Photogrammetry laboratory

Services that can be provided in this laboratory are: 

  • Study of aerial photographs and preparation of geological maps with the help of aerial and satellite photographs by stereoscope
  • Preparation of geomorphological maps, topography, etc.
  • Training courses, familiarity with aerial photography, interpretation of aerial photography, familiarity with photogrammetric devices, and introductory courses of G.I.S

Service and research works include: 

preparation of geological maps, determining the exact location of linear projects (power transmission lines, oil and gas transmission lines, etc.)

 

Regional Studies Laboratory

The services that can be provided in this laboratory are: 

  • Training courses related to urban geography, rural geography and regional geography, holding workshops on practical activities of urban planning for master's degree students 
  • Holding workshops on regional applied geography pole, organizing student seminars for master’s programs and providing research services such as preparing urban and rural plans, preparing and drawing urban and rural maps and preparing albums of urban maps
  • Conducting rural projects with the cooperation of related organizations and institutions

This laboratory prepares and draws urban and rural maps in the framework of research plans and projects and prepares an album of urban maps

 

Meteorological laboratory and station

Meteorological laboratory and station is located on the north side of the university. This station has equipment including: 

  • Barometer to measure pressure changes and the entry of high pressure and low pressure systems into the area
  • Chandelier to measure the amount of sunshine used for bioclimatic phenomena, agriculture and evaporation
  • Wet and dry thermometers and absolute maximum and minimum that are used to measure the fluctuations of the highest and lowest temperatures that occur during the day and the amount of dry and humid air
  • Soil thermometer to measure soil temperature per month (various applications for agriculture)
  • Windmill to measure wind intensity and wind direction (application in urban climate to move atmospheric systems)
  • Evaporator to measure evaporation
  • Hygrometer to measure air humidity in terms of human biology, plants and facilities

This laboratory provides the data needed for research at various levels for students of geography, hydrology, environment, architecture and urban planning, agriculture and meteorology.

Other services provided in this laboratory include training courses for systematic obtaining and analysis of daily data and registration in Sinop offices and training in working with meteorological tools and equipment.

Holding courses and workshops: systematic collection and analysis of daily data and their registration in Sinop offices, training in working with meteorological tools and equipment.

 

Cartography laboratory

The training courses of this laboratory include familiarity with topographic and geological maps, method of preparing geomorphological maps, familiarity with tools and equipment for preparing geomorphological maps, familiarity with vector tools and equipment, and familiarity with cartography

Instruments: 

  • Scanner, theodolite cameras and leveling cameras and accessories
  • Topographic maps in scales of 1: 50000 and 1: 250000
  • Geological maps in scales of 1: 250000 and 1: 100000 and geomorphological maps of Iran

In this laboratory, classes of mapping and interpretation of topographic and cartographic maps are performed for bachelor’s students. 

Services include preparing geomorphological maps, preparing hypsometric maps, preparing slope maps, and longitudinal and transverse profiles, preparing thematic maps using basic (topographic) maps, collecting features and preparing topographic maps in scale 1: 100 to 1: 2000, direct ground method, automatic cartography using auto cad and sdr-map softwares.
