Earth Sciences

Sedimentary Basins and Petroleum

We can refer to many issues that exist in the process of accelerating development in different countries of the world, such as increasing complexities in oil, gas and coal resources exploration, use of geothermal energy and ocean wave energy, methods and means of exploring new and seemingly endless mineral resources in the deep oceans, new ways of exploring metal and non-metallic resources in the earth’s solid crust, etc.

These issues have naturally affected the teaching and research of earth sciences in prestigious universities, so that in many of these universities, earth sciences today is different from earth sciences in the past. Accompanying this wave of developments requires the strengthening of “specialization” and the introduction of “new specialties” in educational programs, especially in the type and method of research, both in dissertations and in research projects. And this in itself requires a review of the scientific organization of faculties and departments.

On this occasion, the Faculty of Earth Sciences of Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), in line with the specialized needs of the country, especially in the field of hydrocarbon materials, from preliminary and fundamental studies to exploration, overdraft, reservoir simulation and dozens of other issues has established the Department of Sedimentary Basins and Petroleum in order to take a long step towards scientific and industrial self-sufficiency of the country and the realization of the relationship between the university and industry, considering the existing facilities and potentials, while training specialized and efficient personnel.

The activities of this department are:

  • Training specialized and efficient personnel in the field of fundamental and practical issues related to the oil and gas industry
  • Making postgraduate dissertations purposeful in line with the scientific and industrial needs of the country
  • Participation in the implementation of projects related to the oil and gas industry in order to meet the needs of the country
  • Conducting fundamental and applied studies in the field of sedimentary and oil basins
  • Realizing the relationship between the university and industry in the direction of scientific and industrial self-sufficiency of the country
